Teaching Power Yoga
What is power yoga anyway?
The rise of power yoga in recent years has attracted many individuals seeking to teach this dynamic and physical style of yoga. However, a concerning trend has emerged: some yoga instructors are teaching power yoga without undergoing proper training for this specific style of yoga.
Power yoga is an athletic form of yoga that emphasizes strength, flexibility, and stamina. It requires a deep understanding of the body, alignment principles, and the specific sequences that characterize this style.
Without proper training, instructors may lack the knowledge needed to guide students safely through the poses, which can lead to injuries.
However, leading a power yoga class does not mean a fitness only based yoga practice. And this is where some often go wrong.
In untrained hands, the emphasis on power and intensity can overshadow the core principle of power yoga: everything you do on your mat should help you with everything you do off your mat.
Power yoga uses the physical practice as a tool for transformation - leading to more mindfulness and self-awareness.
Ultimately, the integrity of power yoga as a practice depends on qualified instructors who can create a safe and nurturing environment for their students.
